Gov. Ferguson signed several healthcare-related bills into law following the 2026 Washington regular legislative session.
- SB 6183 Concerning Coverage for HIV Antiviral Drugs: The law requires health carriers to provide coverage for all Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved HIV antiviral drugs without prior authorization, step therapy, or any other utilization management protocols. This applies to health plans issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2027. Under the law, if the FDA has approved one or more therapeutic equivalents for HIV prevention or treatment, a health plan is not required to cover all equivalent versions without prior authorization, step therapy, or other utilization management, as long as at least one therapeutic equivalent is covered without those restrictions.
- Substitute HB 2242 Access to Preventive Services: The act clarifies state authority by indicating the insurance commissioner may adopt rules and the Department of Health may issue recommendations or guidance regarding preventive care. The law also lists dates previously in effect for which non-grandfathered health plans issued on or after April 1, 2026, must provide preventive services coverage.
