If social media has taught us anything, it's that every generation thinks the others are doing life wrong. One group is still printing directions. Another thinks a phone call is an emergency. That's exactly why "Old School Meets New School" is this month's wellness theme. Each generation has its own experiences, values and communication styles, but we all share a need for connection, purpose and belonging. The good news? Some of the best opportunities to grow, learn and build relationships can come from talking with someone who sees the world a little differently. Whether it's learning a technology shortcut, sharing career wisdom or gaining a fresh perspective, those connections can strengthen workplace culture and personal wellbeing.
Today's workplace includes primarily four generations: baby boomers, Generation X, millennials and Generation Z. Each grew up amid different social, economic and technological changes that helped shape how people communicate, solve problems, build relationships and define success. Appreciating these differences can help us build stronger relationships both inside and outside the workplace. By learning from one another's experiences and recognizing the unique strengths each generation brings, we can improve communication and create a more supportive environment where everyone feels valued and heard. (Lee, n.d.)
One of the greatest strengths of today's workforce is this melting pot of mixed generations working, learning, and growing together. These experiences, perspectives and skills can be a powerful source of connection, innovation and collaboration when we dedicate time to learn from one another. Research shows that employees who feel connected to their coworkers and organization are more engaged, healthier and more likely to stay with their employer. Fostering conversations, sharing knowledge and embracing different viewpoints can help organizations create a culture where employees of all ages feel supported and empowered to contribute their best work. (Metlife 24th Annual US Employee Benefit Trends Study: The Success Reset, 2026)
Research shows that people across age groups are far more alike than they are different. Regardless of generation, employees want to make a meaningful contribution, continue learning, feel valued and see opportunities for growth. Digital expertise, fresh perspectives and decades of industry knowledge and practical experience create powerful opportunities for organizations. When employees share their knowledge, listen to one another and build relationships across generations, innovation grows, teamwork strengthens and everyone benefits. Learning is not a one-way street in the workplace; valuable insights can come from anyone, regardless of age or experience level. (OWENS, n.d.)
This month, take part in the Old School Meets New School Challenge. Connect with a coworker from a different generation and ask them to teach you something new, such as a technology shortcut, communication tip, industry insight or productivity hack. You may discover that some of the best learning happens through the people you work with every day. Then, take a moment to say thank you. Send a quick email, Teams message or note to someone from a different generation who has helped or inspired you and let them know why it mattered.
