Coverage Required for Additional Postpartum Services

On October 8, 2021, Senate Bill 0967 became effective, enacting the Improving Health Care for Pregnant and Postpartum Individuals Act (the Act) which expands maternal and postpartum services.

The Act requires health plans to cover additional postpartum services, such as prenatal depression screenings and nurse home visitation for an entire year after pregnancy. It also requires coverage for postpartum services related to mental health and substance abuse. The bill intends to reduce health disparities for all Illinois women and improve maternal health outcomes for minority women.

Employers should be aware of these developments and confirm with carriers that group health plans are compliant with the new coverage mandates as applicable.
