Coverage for Telemedicine Services Delivered in or Outside a Health Care Facility

On June 7, 2017, Gov. Scott signed S.50 into law, which relates to coverage of telemedicine. Under the new law, group health plans must cover health care services delivered through telemedicine, regardless of whether the patient is receiving the services in a health care facility, at home, at work or anywhere else. Previously, Vermont law required plans to cover telemedicine services only if the patient was located at a health care facility (such as a hospital). The law is effective for plans issued or renewed on or after Oct. 1, 2017.

The law contains no new employer compliance obligations, but employers should be aware of the coverage requirements for telemedicine should any employees have questions.
