June 27, 2017
On May 27, 2017, Gov. Abbott signed SB 1107 into law. The bill prohibits plans from excluding coverage for telemedicine solely because the services aren’t provided in person. However, plans aren’t required to cover telemedicine provided through synchronous or asynchronous audio interactions, such as audio-only telephone calls, text-only emails or fax transmissions. Additionally, insurers are required to adopt and communicate polices on telemedicine, and must post them prominently on their website.
This bill is effective on Jan. 1, 2018.
