On June 28, 2016, Gov. Raimondo signed HB 7616 into law, establishing that plans must provide coverage for medical treatment of mental illness and substance abuse under the same terms and conditions as coverage is provided for other diseases and illnesses. The law establishes that plans can't apply annual or lifetime dollar limitations to coverage for mental health and substance use disorder treatment. Additionally, plans must include medication-assisted treatment or medication-assisted maintenance services of substance use disorders, opioid overdoses and chronic addiction, including methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone or other clinically appropriate medications. This law is effective immediately.
