On July 20, 2016, Gov. Raimondo signed HB 7254 into law. Under the law, employers may not withhold from employee wages any amounts not authorized by federal or state law or by court order, unless the employee has granted written or electronic approval. In regards to payroll deductions for benefits, this reinforces existing law requiring an authorization to withhold wages. Employers violating this section may now also be subject to treble damages (meaning the statute permits the court to award triple damages), payable to the employee, of the amount wrongfully withheld. This law became effective upon signature.
