On Oct. 16, 2015, Attorney General Schneiderman announced an agreement with four urgent care centers to provide clear, detailed information to consumers about their participation with health plans. This is the first enforcement action related to the “Surprise Bill Law” passed in 2014 and announced in the April 7, 2015 edition of Compliance Corner.
As background, the law requires enhanced consumer disclosures to protect patients from medical bills for visiting out-of-network providers and holds consumers harmless. Also required are enhanced consumer disclosures from insurers, doctors and hospitals (including urgent care centers) resulting in consumers more easily knowing which providers are out-of-network, how much those providers expect to charge and how much the insurer expects to cover.
