On May 15, 2015, Gov. Abbott signed SB 979 into law. The law expands indemnity plans to cover medical care if not hospital-confined (i.e. performed on an outpatient basis). Further, the Texas Insurance Code currently uses certain terminology, now considered outdated, which is in conflict with federal terminology. The law instructs the insurance commissioner to adopt minimum standards and update the outdated terminology for fixed indemnity health insurance policies not later than Jan. 1, 2016. The law was effective May 15, 2015.
