On June 19, 2015, Gov. Nixon signed SB 145 into law. This act requires health benefit plans to provide coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders. Such coverage must include different specialist services if they are deemed necessary by the patient’s physician. Additionally, the act requires that treatments for eating disorders must consider the overall medical and mental health needs of the patient, and cannot be based solely on weight. The act is effective for health plans issued or renewed on or after Jan. 1, 2017.
