June 16, 2015
On May 25, 2015, Gov. Sandoval signed AB6 into law, creating Chapter 156. Chapter 156, among other things, increases the amount insured plans must cover for behavioral therapy related to autism spectrum disorder. “Behavioral therapy” means any interactive therapy derived from evidence-based research, including, without limitation, discrete trial training, early intensive behavioral intervention, intensive intervention programs, pivotal response training and verbal behavior provided by a licensed psychologist, licensed behavior analyst, licensed assistant behavior analyst or autism behavior interventionist. Under previous law, insurers were required to cover up to $36,000 per year for behavioral therapy. This law increases that amount to require insurers to cover up to the actuarial equivalent of $72,000. This increased amount is effective for insured health plans in Nevada delivered, issued for delivery or renewed on or after Jan. 1, 2017.
